Volcano!

Hello Parents,
Today was an exciting day we learned all about volcano's! We learned that a volcano is a mountain that is hallow with a pool of molten rock (lava) inside. When pressure builds up inside the volcano lava heats up and flows out of the hole on the top. Volcano eruptions have been known to knock down and burn entire forest, and cause other natural disasters. Its not safe to live near a volcano.

Today during art we discussed what it might be like to live near a volcano. We made our very own "Dino Land!" We colored the background and made a volcano. We encouraged the children to make up their very own dinosaur story. We let the children pick a tiny Dino to play with inside their Dino land.
All finished, time to play!

Coloring the Dino Land

Today we also played heel to toe. We taped 5 papers together in a line, and learned that it was 52 inches long. We learned that a T-Rex's foot was 52 inches long from heel to toe. The children were able to count how many footsteps (heel to toe) it would take them get across the Dino's footprint.

We played a game called fallow the tracks. We placed our volcano's on the floor and took pieces of paper and made a path around them and took turns making it through the dangerous volcano's!

 Show and Tell!

The kids were so excited to show everyone what they brought in from home! Each child told a story about their item. Then the children got to ask any question they wanted. Needless to say they all loved it!

Jurassic Plants!

Hello Parents,
Today we had so much fun learning about Jurassic Plants! We played two games that focused on plants; Top or Bottom, and Dark Leaves. We also made our very own flashcards that has our colors, numbers, shape, and letters for the month. We also enjoyed the snow and went outside at 8:30am til 9:00am.

Top or Bottom is a brain box before playing this game we discussed the different parts of plants. FACT: Scientist have found roots in some dinosaurs skeletons and leaves in other skeletons. So this means some dinosaurs must have ate plants. The children said "It was because they think plants are yummy!"

One, two, three, go!

Throwing it way up!

For this game the children get to take turns, and throw the brain box high into the air. Once it falls down you read the action that the children will do.
Such as make an OVAL with your hands and legs!

We also played Dark leaves! We discussed, how do you think dinosaurs chose which leaves to eat? Also, how do you decide your favorite food?

We worked together to put the leaves in order from lightest to darkest. Then darkest to lightest.

Once we finished each child got to pick the leaf that he or she would eat if they were a dinosaur.

For art this morning we made flashcards, and talked about how dinosaurs fed their babies. We believe they went looking for food and brought it back to their nest!
Reminders:
Show and Tell is tomorrow, please bring in your item that is or reminds you of a dinosaur!

Jurassic Climate!

Hello Parents,
Today we learned all about Jurassic Climate! We talked today about what it means to be dry, and the opposite wet. The children also played a game called wet and Dry. Where they were able to try and spell wet and dry with letters.

For art we made a Triceratops eating leaves. The children were able to explore the color's red and blue. We asked "What do you think happens when colors mix together? All the children agreed it would make a new color; Orange, purple, green, and yellow.
We couldn't decide what color it makes, we had to mix it!

Red and Blue make PURPLE!

During writing time we practiced writing our uppercase D, and lowercase d.

I did it!

Then we colored our D's blue, and the DINOSAURS green!

Reminder:
Tuesday January 31st 2012 is show and tell!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! See you Monday!

Footprints!

Hello Parents,
Today was a very exciting day. We learned all about dinosaur footprints. We talked about what they would do if they found one. Most of the children said they would run away. Then they said dinosaurs are very, very big! Today we asked the children. Which dinosaurs do you think had big step and which one took little steps? They said the t-Rex took big steps so does the brontosaurs. But they think the pterodactyl would take little steps.

But we had the most fun playing with our dinosaur feet, we learned it was pretty hard to have such big feet like a dinosaur. We had a blast roaring!

For our group game we played puzzle making. It was a puzzle of dinosaur bones! Our teacher hid the puzzles pieces around the room and we went searching for the "Dinosaur bones." Once we collected all the bones we put it together and discovered it was the bones of a T-Rex!

We also focused on the number 10. During writing time we talked about what details you might find in a dinosaur footprint. We gave the children their journals and found the page with ten eggs on it. We encouraged the children to trace the number ten. Then we asked them to draw two ovals, and 10 circles to make feet!

We will be having show and tell!

Please help your child find something that reminds him/her of a dinosaur!

Please bring in the item, photo, or drawing on or before Tuesday!

Tails!

Hello Parents,

Today we learned about dinosaur tails. We asked the kids if they were a dinosaur would they prefer a long tail or short tail? Most of the kids would like a long tail they said because it would help protect them. We learned a poem that went along with the the tails.

Brontosaurus has a long one,
Mussaurus's was small,
Stegosaurus had a spiky one,
But we don't have one at all.
Tails

We also learned about Australia and learned that in January here it is summer there. We played a yes or no game called dinosaur parts. We had a hanger with yes and no taped on the hanger, and had cups hanging under the yes or no. Each kid had an object and was asked a yes or no question such as Would you like to have a long tail? Each kid had to then put there object in the correct cup. Afterwords all the kids could see how much more said yes or no.

We also played a game called collecting bones. Each kid got to pick a dinosaur they wanted to be and put it at the start. Then they rolled the dice and moved there dinosaur the correct amount of spaces. On the space was either; nothing there, collect 1 bone, collect 2 bones, give back 1 bone, or give back 2 bones. They had to collect as many bones as they could. When they got to the end they had to count all they bones. Then tell how many bones they had. They kids really enjoyed playing this fun game!

We had they also take the bones and pretend there finger was a tail and try to balance the bone on there finger. This was really fun the kids found out how hard it would be to not have hands to hold things.

For art today we gave each kid a piece of string to paint with. We had them pretend that the string was a tail of a dinosaur. They really enjoyed painting with the strings!

Dinosaur Wings!

Hello Parents,

Today we learned all about why some dinosaurs had wings. Paleontologist believe that the bones of the flying Pterodactyls were hallo, which made it much easier for them to fly. We also, had so much fun with our new story called Digging up bones. A story about a doggy who finds bones in the backyard and thinks because they are heavy they must be Dino bones. Then, for art we started making a flying pterodactyl, we had so much fun painting it with a feather. Hopefully by tomorrow we will be able to put them together and play with them!

The Children thought it was so exciting that we were painting with a feather, that they didn't want to stop so we decided to explore the colors we are learning this month Purple and Green!

Today during our group game we played Big Steps to the B. I made a lower case b and and upper case B. And Put them 20 feet way from each other. The children and I talked about the letter B and the sound that it makes then explained that a pterodactyls wings were 20 feet the same as how far apart our B's are.

We took turns taking BIG dinosaur steps from the lowercase to the uppercase, then we tried different ways to get from one B to the other, such as the crab crawl.

We also learned a new song today here is the lyrics, so you can sing at home.

Child's name has two big wings, two big wings, two big wings.
Child's name has two big wings,
fly, child's name, fly!

Dino Neck and Back!

Hello Parents,
Today we are learning about the different kinds of neck's and back's the dinosaurs had. We played a math counting game called Stretch for the leaves. We counted all the way to 19! We discussed reasons why the Brontosaurus has such a long neck. The children decided the reason was so he could reach way up to the top of the trees and eat the leaves. For art we finger painted a Brontosaurus and discussed how his neck and back were different then our neck and back. Then we located our neck and back and the Dinosaurs neck and back!

One of the 3 year olds also made the conclusion that the brontosaurus is just like a giraffe because, they both have long necks to reach the trees. All the Children thought that was so silly! How smart?

We also focused on the letter Bb, using our B flowers. We passed them around and made the sound a B makes. We had such a fun day learning about all the different necks and backs! During reading time we read; I dreamt I was a Dinosaur. The children loved it so much they wanted to read it for our nap time story.

Dinosaur Dig!

Hello Parents,
Welcome to All About Children's new preschool blog.  This month your child will travel back to the age of dinosaurs. He will dig in the dirt like a paleontologist, study rocks and build with bones. Your child will stomp like a dinosaur, stretch his neck like a Brontosaurus, show his Sharp teeth like T-Rex and make a pterodactyl fly. He and she will learn about Jurassic plants, climate, and even experiment with an overflowing volcano. Prepare  for a big month of learning and discovery with dinosaurs.

You can also Reinforce these basics at home:

Letters: Vv, Ee, Bb
Shape: Oval
Numbers: 9 and 10
Colors: Purple and Green
Social Behavior: Forgiving

The Preschoolers had a blast Searching for the mommy dinosaur eggs and bringing them back to the nest!
